em>Your comments on the revelation of President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo'€™s maritime doctrine, which will hinge on five pillars of action, including the development of maritime defense power:

The scheme seems to lack an ecological perspective and regard for environmental concerns, such as the preservation of seabed flora and fauna, reefs, and protection of beaches against aberrations and pollution.

Regarding maritime defense power, we should proceed cautiously in order not to be regarded with suspicion by our neighbors and trigger an arms race in the region.

Corolus Putranto

I agree with Jokowi'€™s dream of having a strong maritime axis, but as far as I know, you must learn to walk before you can run.

As far as I am aware, you need experts to command a global maritime axis, and having the boats is but the first prerequisite; having the experience to navigate Indonesian waters is a different ball game.

I don'€™t think that the maritime doctrine is President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo'€™s doctrine. It could be a doctrine from abroad. I'€™m sure that he and Jusuf Kalla can'€™t rid themselves of the influence of their backers; I just hope, for the sake of Indonesia, that in this case I'€™m wrong.

There is nothing more important than developing better connectivity between the thousands of islands, especially the outer islands, to integrate them into economic development.

President Joko Widodo launched his '€œmaritime doctrine'€ in several international fora. At present, he should focus his doctrine at a national level while developing our naval and airpower, reshape our harbors, establish a fleet of rapid cargo vessels connecting our islands and form an able coastguard.

To internationalize the principles at the current stage will only jeopardize our status as an archipelagic state.

In developing our maritime defense power, I would personally suggest prioritizing Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi'€™s project to revamp our ocean fishing industry (OFI).

The profits that would be derived from the OFI could be used to further develop maritime defense power according to our defense needs.

In the meantime, the corresponding necessary infrastructure will be built to ensure the smooth economic development of the country as integrated into the development of the maritime defense program.
