600 personnel prepared for floods

T

he Jakarta chapter of the Natural Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has prepared 600 personnel to deal with flooding during the rainy season.

'€œOur 600 personnel are ready to face any flood-related emergencies,'€ agency head Bambang Musyawardana said Wednesday.

He explained that the personnel were trained to quickly gather information about what the flood victims needed most in an emergency condition.

Furthermore, they would immediately set up a public kitchen to provide food to victims.

'€œThey will immediately contact the medical team if medicines are needed,'€ he said, as quoted by Antara news agency.

The agency has also prepared important equipment, such as rubber boats and tents, which will be needed to handle emergency conditions.

Bambang also said his side had contacted several civil society groups to help them tackle problems triggered by flooding because it was impossible for the agency to deal with major disasters alone.

Previously, the Jakarta Police and the Jakarta Military Command said that they were prepared to deploy a total of 24,500 officers to handle emergencies during the rainy season.

According to the agency, Jakarta has 125 sub-districts prone to flooding.

Most of the sub-districts are located in West and North Jakarta, especially along the Ciliwung, Angke, Krukut and Sunter rivers.
