Ministry to require urine tests of university officials

T

he Research and Technology and Higher Education Ministry says it will require urine tests of officials of universities following the recent arrest of Musakkir, a professor from the University of Hasanuddin'€™s (Unhas) School of Law, and his fellow lecturer, Ismail Alrip, over alleged drug abuse.

Research and Technology and Higher Education Minister M. Nasir said such urine tests were crucial to ensure that all officials in the academic environment had good morals.

'€œI'€™m considering whether officials of universities need to undergo urine tests,'€ Nasir said, as quoted by kompas.com at the Vice President office in Jakarta on Thursday.

Police say they caught Musakkir red-handed consuming crystal methamphetamine, locally known as shabu-shabu, with a female student in a room at the Hotel Grand Malibu, Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Nov.14.

Concerning Musakkir'€™s case, Nasir said he had summoned and instructed university rectors to be aware of and to control the spread of narcotics and illegal drugs in campus areas.

Nasir further said that Musakkir'€™s professorship could be revoked if he was proven guilty of using drugs and sentenced to more than five years in prison.

"His title will be automatically revoked if he is declared guilty by the court based on existing laws,'€ he said.

Nasir further said Musakkir must also be dismissed from his status as a civil servant if he is sentenced to more than five years in prison. The sanction would be in accordance with Government Regulation No.35/2010 on civil servant discipline, he added.

The Makassar Police named Musakkir, Ismail and four other people as suspects on Sunday after they tested positive for crystal methamphetamine.

Makassar City Police chief Sr. Comr. Fery Abraham said they were charged with violating Law No.35/2009 on narcotics. (ask/ebf)(+++)
