AKARTA: Indonesia had a mixed second day at the 2014 Pepsi ICC East Asia-Pacific (EAP) Men's Trophy in Lismore, Australia, where it won one game and lost another on Thursday.
In the third round, favorites PNG thrashed Indonesia by 198 runs. Electing to bat first, PNG plundered 255/4 in 20 overs, with their openers A. Vala and L. Siaka scoring 70 and 71 runs respectively. Indonesia struggled to reach 62/9 in 20 overs, according to written reports from the Jakarta Cricket Association (JCA).
In the other third-round matches, Samoa (203/4 in 20 overs) beat the Cook Islands (115 all out in 19 overs) by 88 runs. The Philippines (106/4 in 14.4 overs) overcame Japan (102/9 in 20 overs) by six wickets and Vanuatu (128/9 in 20 overs) defeated Fiji (93 all out in 18.3 overs) by 35 runs.
Indonesia bagged its first win of the tournament in the fourth round against Cook Islands. In a close game, Indonesia beat Cook Islands by three runs. Electing to bat first, Indonesia put on 138/5 in 20 overs, including an opening partnership of 78 runs in 11 overs. Viraj Bhammar top scored with 45 and Ben Burgess scored 41 runs.
Indonesia had Cook Islands on the back foot after 16 overs, when the latter needed 40 more runs in the last four overs with just four wickets in hand. But some late hitting by Cook Islands brought the game to a nail-biting finish where they needed just four runs off the last ball to tie the match. They could manage only one run, giving Indonesia victory by three runs.
In the other fourth-round matches, Fiji (161/9 in 20 overs) defeated Japan (79 all out in 18 overs) by 82 runs. Vanuatu (158/7 in 20 overs) saw off Samoa (148/9 in 20 overs) by a close 10 runs.
PNG (202/7 in 20 overs), meanwhile, thumped the Philippines (30 all out in 10 overs) by a whopping 172 runs.
Out of four matches played by each of the eight teams, PNG and Vanuatu are the only two to remain unbeaten having won all their four matches, while Cook Islands has lost all its matches. Samoa has won three out of four games, Fiji has won two and lost two, while Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia have each won one game and lost three.
