wikorita Karnawati will be inaugurated as rector of the Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta on Monday, replacing her predecessor Pratikno, who was appointed as state secretary in the Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo-Jusuf Kalla administration.
Dwikorita's appointment is significant because she is the first ever female rector in the university's history.
'This is a historical moment because for the first time, we have a female rector,' said Sofian Effendi, head of the UGM's board of trustees, or Majelis Wali Amanah (MWA), in Yogyakarta on Saturday.
Pratikno is expected to attend the inauguration ceremony, which will take place at the university's Balairung Hall.
In the selection process on Saturday, 19 out of 23 MWA members chose Dwikorita as UGM's new rector.
'The new rector replaces the former rector, Prof. Pratikno, and will continue his work until May 2017,' said Sofian after the MWA meeting on Saturday afternoon.
The MWA received Pratikno's resignation letter at the beginning of November.
Sofian explained that five potential candidates, all of whom were deputy rectors, had competed for the position. Two of the five candidates could not proceed further because they were above the age limit of 60 years old.
Dwikorita, formerly deputy rector for alumni and cooperation, beat two other candidates, namely Iwan Dwiprahasto (deputy rector for academics and student affairs) and Didi Achjari (deputy rector for financing and information systems).
'Through a consensus, we agreed to select Dwikorita [as new rector] and the other candidates committed to giving her their full support,' said Sofian.
Born in Yogyakarta on June 6, 1964, Dwikorita, who was also formerly the head of geological engineering at the UGM School of Engineering, obtained her Master's degree and doctorate from Leeds University in the UK. (dyl/ebf)(+++)
