ulture and Elementary and Secondary Education Minister Anies Baswedan has said that National Teachers Day, which will be celebrated on Tuesday, is a golden opportunity to implement 'mental revolution', the concept of which has been popularized by President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo.
'In line with the President's directives, mental revolution is a concept to improve human quality to move Indonesia forward,' said Anies as quoted by kompas.com in a statement ahead of the National Teachers Day celebrations in Jakarta on Monday.
The theme of this year's National Teachers Day, which coincides with the 69th anniversary of the Indonesian Teachers Association (PGRI), is 'Realizing mental revolution through reinforcements of teachers' strategic roles'.
Anies said that no matter how great an institution was, it could not aid development if it was handled by people with misguided concepts about the development of humanity.
Therefore, he said, his ministry would focus on improvement of the quality of teachers in Indonesia in 2015.
The head of the Education Quality Improvement and Resources Agency, Syawal Gultom, said the improvement programs would focus on individual work assessments.
'The teacher-capacity building milestone, which has been in place since 2004, has not yet been able to result in optimal teacher performance. Individual-based professional services must be reinforced,' he said.
The milestone of teacher-capacity building began when teaching was declared a profession in 2004. The milestone was followed with the teacher-certification program in 2006; since 2008, the government has paid subsidies to the teaching profession.
Syawal went on to say that the quality of teachers would be improved through training programs both in classes and online.
He said the program would be provided for 3.2 million teachers working in around 207 schools in areas across Indonesia, from elementary education through to senior high school. (dyl/ebf)(+++)
