Former coach lambasts '€˜insane'€™ match

A

recent soccer match between PSIS Semarang and PSS Sleman that descended into a farce with both teams scoring deliberate own goals, has been slammed by former PSIS coach Sartono Anwar.

'€œIt was an insane match. How come the players deliberately scored own goals?'€ Sartono questioned in Semarang, Central Java, on Saturday.

He was speaking in a forum entitled '€œPSIS [belum] Mati'€ or PSIS (not yet) Dead, held by the Semarang Punya Cerita community.

PSIS and PSS faced each other on Oct. 26 in the last group stage of the Indonesian Premier League, the tier below the Indonesian Super League.

The match ended in a 3-2 win for PSIS, but the goals came as a result of deliberate own goals in an attempt by both teams to avoid facing undesirable opponents from the other group in the next fixture.

'€œI don'€™t understand why PSIS responded with own goal after PSS had scored an own goal,'€ said Sartono, who won a league trophy with PSIS in 1998.

He said PSIS'€™ players should have alerted match officials about the PSS'€™ own goal, instead of responding with an own goal of their own.

The Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) disciplinary commission has disqualified both teams from the league.

The players and officials found guilty have been banned from soccer, with punishments ranging from a year to life.

Those receiving life bans and a Rp 100 million (US$8,227) fine include PSS players Riyono, Agus Setyawan and Hermawan Putra Jati, and PSIS players Catur Adi Nugroho, Komaedi, Fadli Manan and Saptono.

These players were deemed to have been directly involved in the goals.

Five-year bans and Rp 50 million fines were given to PSS players Ridwan Awaludin, Eko Setyawan Aji, Anang Hadi Saputra, Mudah Yulianto, Moniega Bagus Suwardi, Marwan Muhammad, Satrio Aji Saputra and Wahyu Gunawan, as well as PSIS players Vidi Hasiholan, Elina Soka, Andik Rahmat, Franky Mahendra, Taufik Hidayat,
Sunar Sulaiman and Anam Syahrul Kurniawan.

They did not score but they were deemed to have not attempted to prevent the incidents.

A one-year-ban with five-year probation and a Rp 50 million fine was handed to a number of reserve players, including PSS'€™ Saktiawan Sinaga, Guy Junior Nke Ondoua, Kristian Adelmund, Rasmoyo, Waluyo, Gratheo Hadi Witama, as well as PSIS'€™ Hari Nur Yulianto, Ahmad Noviandani, Ivo Andre Wibowo, Edyanto and Safrudin Tahar.

PSIS'€™ foreign players Ronald Fagundez and Julio Alcorse also received a five-year ban and a Rp 150 million fine each. The PSSI said they had failed to set the right example to local players.

PSIS CEO Yoyok Sukawi said the club would appeal the punishment.

'€œWe will await written notification of the sanctions,'€ he said, adding that the sanctions were too harsh.

'€œI reiterate that an instruction to score own goals was never given. It was the players'€™ spontaneity when they saw PSS players scoring own goals,'€ he said.
