Public transportation fares increase by 14% in Jambi

ollowing the recent hikes in subsidized-fuel prices, the Jambi administration increased public transportation fares in the province by 14 percent, exceeding the Transportation Ministry'€™s suggested increase of 10 percent.

Amsyarnedi, head of the Jambi Transportation Agency'€™s land transportation division, said that based on the results of a meeting with two related institutions, the Organization of Land Transportation Owners (Organda) and the Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI), the administration decided to increase public transportation rates for inter-city intra-province (AKDP) buses to Rp 215 (less than one US cent) per kilometer per person, from Rp 185.

'€œThe upper ceiling of AKDP buses is set at Rp 215 per passenger per kilometer, up by 14 percent from the previous rate of Rp 185,'€ Amsyarnedi said on Tuesday.

He acknowledged that the rate exceeded the new suggested fare increase of 10 percent set by the Transportation Ministry.

'€œAccording to a Transportation Minister circular, the rate increase should not exceed 10 percent; however, we will leave the matter to the provincial administration to decide based on capacities in the region,'€ said Amsyarnedi.

He said the 14-percent increase was a compromised figure the administration had decided on not only to avoid burdening members of the public as public transportation users but also to accommodate the wishes of transport owners.

Earlier, transportation owners in Jambi proposed a 20-percent increase in public transportation fares, he added.

According to official data, the number of AKDP bus providers in Jambi reaches 10 companies. Unlike AKDP buses, fare increases for non-economy forms of transportation such as shuttle-bus services will be determined by the market.

'€œThe new fare [increase] will take effect after it gets approval from Jambi Governor Hasan Basri Agus,'€ said Amsyarnedi. (ebf)(++++)
