he local election for a new mayor to replace outgoing Depok mayor Nur Mahmudi Ismail will be suspended until 2018. The Home Ministry will appoint a government official as acting mayor for the next two years.
Chair of the Depok General Elections Commission (KPUD), Titik Nurhayati, said in Depok on Wednesday the move was in line with the 2014 government regulation in lieu of law that ordered the suspension of local elections for regional heads whose terms of office ended in 2016, 2017 and 2018, and the holding of simultaneous local elections nationwide in 2018.
'The local election in Depok is suspended until 2018 because Nur Mahmudi's term of office ends in January 2016,' she said, as quoted by tribunnews.com.
She added that the appointment of an acting mayor would be regulated in a further regulation that would be issued by the Home Ministry and that all matters regarding the simultaneous elections and acting mayors and regents were still being discussed by the General Elections Commission (KPU). (***)
