orkers of giant mining firm PT Freeport Indonesia, who are members of seven local tribes, have refused a working agreement between the company and the All Indonesian Workers Union (SPSI).
Some 600 workers from the Amungme, Kamoro, Moni, Ekari, Damal, Mee and Dani tribes gathered in Timika on Wednesday to reject the agreement that had been made in the absence of the workers from the tribes.
The workers' coordinator, Yopnis Tabuni, said workers from the tribes that are the customary owners of the land should have been invited to arrange the agreement, which was signed in Jakarta on Nov. 17 between the firm and SPSI.
In a release, Freeport spokesperson Daysi Primayanti said the agreement stated it would set up an arbitration council, which would consist of three members who would help settle disputes in the future. (***)
