A gathering of retired defense and security chiefs, the Pinnacle Club of ASEAN, has announced a plan to set up the Pinnacle Club Mentorship Exchange, an informal interchange of ideas for regional military and security officers.
The club announced the plan at the end of its three-day visit to Brunei Darussalam, hosted by founding patron in the country, General (Ret) Pehin Dato Haji Mohammad Haji Daud.
'The armed forces are increasingly dependent on technology in running their day-to-day affairs,' Pehin Mohammad said in a statement made available to The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
He further said that communication and friendly interaction between forces of regional countries was also important to help maintain peace, stability and friendship.
'It is also becoming increasingly important that the older generation of officers can pass down their wisdom, knowledge and soft skills to both younger and current officers to ensure that younger generations can carry the torch of friendship and camaraderie in the years to come,' said Pehin Mohammad.
He is one of six founding patrons of the club, including Gen. (Ret) Try Sutrisno of Indonesia, Gen. (Ret) Hashim Mohd Ali of Malaysia, Gen.(Ret) Fidel Ramos of the Philippines, Gen. (Ret) Winston Choo of Singapore and Gen. (Ret) Chavalit Yongchaiyudh of Thailand.
Formalized in early 2014, the Pinnacle Club has not only provided a social setting for old friends to meet but also offered alternative channels of communication that can hopefully help address issues affecting good relations among ASEAN member countries.
The club has around 40 members, comprising retired officials from regional defense and security services. Together with the founding patrons, they keep up the spirit of camaraderie they have known during their professional military lives through the club's regular gatherings and social events.
In line with the club's initial purpose, the Pinnacle Club Mentorship Exchange aims to provide a social platform for younger professional military and security officers to be invited to participate in selected events and activities of the club.
'This will allow an informal interchange of experience, wisdom and fresh ideas between the ex-chiefs with young officers,' said the club, adding that the younger military and security officers would be nominated by the founding patrons from their respective countries. (ebf)(+++)
