he Medan District Court's panel has sentenced a Thai woman by the name of Tipan Pruksa to 12 years in prison and Rp 1 billion in fines. Should she fail to pay the fine, she must stay for another three months in prison.
Presiding judge Hiras Sihombing said the defendant had been found guilty of smuggling 579.6 grams of crystal methamphetamine, locally known as shabu shabu, from Malaysia into North Sumatra.
'Therefore, the defendant has convincingly violated the Anti-Narcotics Law,' he said on Thursday. Tipan was arrested with drugs found in her shoes and in bodily orifices.
Tipan's lawyer, Chandra Sitio, said he had to consult with the Thai embassy before issuing any statement regarding an appeal. (dic)(+++)
