tate-owned train operator PT KAI will operate 10 extra trains in Java from the end of December to early January 2015 on account of expected surging demand from passengers during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
'With the additional 10 trains, we will be able to provide 11,632 extra seats per day,' KAI commercial director Bambang Eko Martono said in Bandung, West Java, on Thursday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
He said the additional trains would be available on a number of routes, including Jakarta'Cirebon (West Java) served by the Cirebon Ekspress, Jakarta'Surakarta (Central Java) served by the Argo Lawu, and Bandung'Yogyakarta provided by the Lodaya.
'The additional trains will be available for 17 days from Dec. 20 [2014] to Jan. 5 [2015]. During this period, no KAI personnel are allowed to take leave because we have to monitor passenger traffic during the peak season,' he said.
He forecast that the number of passengers during this year's Christmas and year-end holiday would reach 3.85 million.
In addition, the company has prepared the necessary equipment and tools in locations that are prone to flooding and landslides across Java to help keep operations running smoothly. (***)
