At least 50 houses gutted in Central Lampung mob violence

M

ob violence that erupted in Tanjungrejo hamlet, Central Lampung regency on Thursday evening resulted in at least 50 houses being deliberately set ablaze.

The incident is believed to have been sparked by the disappearance of two youths from a neighboring hamlet, whose residents vented their anger by burning the houses, tribunnews.com reported on Friday.

The violence forced most residents of Tanjungrejo hamlet to evacuate to safer areas to avoid further attacks by the mob.

Hundreds of local police officers, led by Central Lampung police chief Brig. Gen. Heru Winarko, with the support of soldiers immediately rushed to the scene to prevent the violence from spreading. (hhr)(++++)
