he city administration plans to evict squatters in Kali Jodo, which is located on the banks of the West Flood Canal (KBB) in Tambora, West Jakarta, and shut down the area's red-light district.
City Secretary Saefullah said that starting in January, the squatters would be relocated to nearby rusunawa (low-cost apartments).
'The relocation will start in January. In total, there are 11 RT [neighborhood units] that will be relocated,' Saefullah told reporters at City Hall in Central Jakarta on Thursday.
Saefullah added that the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) had asked the city administration to clear Kali Jodo of prostitution. 'Therefore, we will shut down the red-light district as well,' he said.
Separately, Jakarta Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama said that the city planned to develop green areas in Kali Jodo.
'We must evict people from the area since it is located on the banks of a flood canal. We want to develop green areas,' Ahok told reporters on the sidelines of an event at Hotel Borobudur in Central Jakarta on Thursday.
He added that his administration planned to add more green areas because currently, such areas only made up 10 percent of the city. Ideally, he said, a city should have be at least 30 percent green areas. (***)
