em>Your comments on a move by a number of lawmakers to file a petition to request that the House of Representatives exercise its inquiry right into President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo'€™s decision to increase the prices of subsidized fuel:

One main point of criticism is that crude oil has dropped. It cannot be pointed out often enough: in rupiah terms there is no drop in crude oil prices compared to 12 months ago.

Kantisini

Jokowi is the most exciting politician to watch in the world. National leaders should pay attention to his actions.

It'€™s been proven that fuel subsidies do not work anywhere in the world.

All it does is pump up demand and waste fuel and government funds.

Any real economist will say exactly that. I'€™ve noticed a drop in Saturday-afternoon joy riding already as people are more conscious of not wasting fuel.

This is a step toward developing the country. The increased transportation costs can be offset by making logistics more efficient using this extra money.

Shame on those who are putting their own interests above the country.

The problem is that the oil price is going down and is now at US$74.50 per barrel and may go down
further if OPEC decides not to cut its output.

This ironic decision of Jokowi is off course and doesn'€™t make sense to a lot of people and this hurts lower-middle and low-income people.

I laud him for having the guts to actually go through with the fuel-price hike.

And, after all, surely getting it out the way now, at the start of his term, means that come the next election people will have come to terms with it, well, maybe.

Helen Nisa Winner

The increase in fuel prices affects mainly the wealthier people. The poorer will benefit because the savings from the fuel subsidy will be used for cheaper health care and education for the poor.

But we all know that those sitting in the House are rich people who always find it difficult to side with poorer people.

Makamba Tecumseh

I appreciate the lawmakers'€™ act. However, I'€™m not sure that the government will change its mind about increasing the fuel prices.

Moreover, foreign countries keep urging the government to revoke the subsidies so they can take part in the fuel trade in Indonesia.

Bi Goez

I think the lawmakers are overreacting just to show the people they are concerned about the welfare the people. They want to show that they are really working after almost two months of unresolved disputes between the two factions.

The majority of the low-income people understand that sooner or later the subsidies for fuel will be ended.
