Danar Hadi: Sophisticated batik collaboration

A sophisticated mix of classic and modern styles in a collection of clothes highlights the collaboration of the country'€™s finest batik garment producer, Danar Hadi, and two renowned designers, Chossy Latu and Priyo Oktaviano.

The collaboration, which was presented in the '€œPrestigious Heritage'€ fashion show that showcased Danar Hadi'€™s latest collection, took modern batik to a whole new level.

'€œThe collection is part of our high-end line, Danar by Danar Hadi, where we make modern designs that emphasize traditional motifs and coloring techniques,'€ said the company'€™s managing director, Diana Santosa.

The fashion show, held at the Hermitage Hotel in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, was divided into two sequences.

Chossy said his collaboration with Danar Hadi, presented in the first part, started a few years ago, but it was the first time they teamed up for a fashion show.

He said that after visiting their factory in Central Java town of Surakarta, he thought there should be a designer who could seriously handle the great batik fabric that they produced.

'€œTheir batik factory is amazing and it sparked my interest to do a bigger collaboration. After discussing it with Ibu Diana, they finally agreed to work together with me to design new looks for Danar Hadi,'€ he says.

The ready-to-wear collection was mostly made of stamped batik on silk.

Bringing the concept of tropical and dynamic designs, Chossy'€™s clothes all came in black and white with the use of traditional motifs, like kawung, parang and flower bouquets.

'€œThis collection is for those living in tropical climates. It can be worn for all occasions, from daily activities to cocktail parties,'€ Chossy said.

Black-and-white shift dresses that combine with long blazers with different motifs, loose black dresses that feature big white flower motifs and long-sleeve dresses with high round collars were ideal for executive women who wanted to have a classic touch to a sophisticated look.

Chossy made more playful, yet elegant clothes when he combined black sequined skirts and pants with Sabrina batik blouses. His jumpsuit, paired with a black sequined jacket, was also the highlight.

The use of pearls of various sizes and styles as accessories, classic 1950-style hats and sunglasses enriched the simple silhouettes of the designs.

'€œTo create a more classic touch, I also applied fashion items from the 1950s, which are also trending now on the global fashion stage,'€ he said.

At the end of the first part, several public figures, such as artist Astari Rasjid, media businesswoman Dian Muljadi and veteran model Danny Dahlan, also walked down the catwalk to present the collection.

A swift change of mood took place in the second chapter, which presented Priyo Oktaviano'€™s colorful designs.

Reddish orange body-fit dresses that featured dark lines forming a simple spider web, knee-length red dresses with sequins that embellish the cheong-sam-style Chinese neckline down through the button lines and orange chiffon skirts paired with two-motif tops were highlights of the collection.

In the last section, the classic color of batik '€” brown, black and off-white '€” that came on elegant dresses, tops and skirts, took the center stage.

The collaboration with the two renowned designers and the fashion show proved Danar Hadi'€™s consistency in producing the finest batik garments for the country and the world.
