wedish skier Maria Pietilae-Holmner set the fastest time Saturday in the first run of a World Cup slalom race ahead of overall leader Tina Maze.
Chasing her first podium of the season, Pietilae-Holmner posted a time of 51.81 seconds in freezing early-morning conditions on the Olympia course, where the sun was barely rising when American skier Mikaela Shiffrin set off first down the slope.
Pietilae-Holmner previous podium finish came on the same course when she came second in a slalom race in March.
Maze, who shook off jet lag to win Friday's giant slalom, finished .22 seconds behind and Frida Hansdotter gave the home fans in northern Sweden more cause for cheer with the third-quickest time, placing .43 behind.
A four-time Olympic medalist and reigning champion in downhill and giant slalom, Maze is seeking her fourth win of the season and second in slalom, after winning in Levi, Finland, last month, where she also finished third the next day.
Hansdotter has two second-place finishes this season ' both in slalom ' at Aspen, Colorado, and Levi, Finland last month.
Switzerland's Wendy Holdener and Austria's Carmen Thalmann placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
