Housing for evacuees ready by Christmas

T

he Mount Sinabung Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) task force announced on Wednesday that the first stage of the relocation-housing project for eruption evacuees in the forested Siosar area in Merek district, Karo regency, North Sumatra, would definitely be completed by Christmas this year.

BPBD task force commander Lt. Col. Asep Sukarna said 50 homes would be built in the initial stage. He added that the number of homes was in line with President Joko Widodo'€™s instructions when he visited evacuees in October.

'€œOur target is to complete all the homes by Christmas,'€ Asep told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

Asep, also Karo Military Command chief, said hundreds of Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel from the Bukit Barisan provincial military command were involved in the housing project in the forested Siosar area. He expressed optimism that the target would be realized by Christmas because the project is currently in its finishing stage.

Asked when the homes could be occupied, Asep said they would already be ready for occupation before the end of the year. The only problem, added Asep, was how to decide who would be the first to occupy the 50 homes in the initial phase. He said 370 families, or 1,116 individuals, were entitled to occupy the homes.
