Culture and Elementary and Secondary Education Minister Anies Baswedan has said that it may be three or four years before a revised curriculum can be implemented nationwide.
Speaking in a discussion on the 2013 curriculum over the weekend, Anies said that the ministry would look at schools' readiness to implement an improved version of the curriculum, emphasizing the need to improve the quality of teachers and to promote better teaching and learning at schools.
Your comments:
Indonesia placed 64th out of 65 nations in the latest PISA results, which compares educational outcomes in math, science and reading. Indonesia was just slightly ahead of Peru in last place. It will take a generation or more to turn this around properly. In the meantime, Indonesia lacks the education level to become more than a commodity-exporting nation. It just doesn't have the skills to really become a middle-income, innovative economy.

So what exactly is this revised curriculum? How will it be different from the 2013 version that he plans to shelve? And since it will take three to four years to implement, what guarantee do we have that the next administration will not change it?

Finally a minister of education who understands the problem: The skills of the teachers and their lack of proper training. Not to stereotype educators in Indonesia, but sadly, most lack the knowledge or intuition to make learning fun.
Creativity in classrooms and critical-thinking skills are of the utmost importance in today's world. Teaching old information from books, which have information our parents and grandparents memorized, is not moving this country forward but keeping it stagnant and stale.
Let's train teachers, so that the next generation of Indonesians can be successful globally.

We know that the best way that should be taken by the minister for the world of education in Indonesia is from teachers. Textbooks are important to support learning activities of students in schools but the teachers are more important for helping students understand the lessons, because the explanation of a teacher makes it easy for the students to understand well. So, skill training of teachers must be held because it starts from teachers to get a good generation of students.
