Govt appoints Telkomsel chief to lead Telkom

S

hareholders have appointed Alex J. Sinaga, 53, the president director of the country's biggest cellular operator PT Telkomsel, as the new president director of state-run telecommunication company PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) on Friday.

Alex will replace Arief Yahya, who was appointed tourism minister in October.

After his appointment during Telkom's shareholders meeting, Alex said he would lead Telkom to become a global player amid a challenging global environment.

"The new board of directors will be confronted with an environment of turbulence. We will strengthen Telkom's core business and patch the shortcomings," he said.

Having earned his Master's degree from the University of Surrey in the UK, Alex has till now spent his career with the Telkom Group, which controls the majority share in Telkomsel, the biggest income earner for Telkom.

As of the third quarter of the year, revenues in publicly listed Telkom grew 7 percent to Rp 66 trillion (US$5.28 billion).

Aside from Alex, also sitting on Telkom's board of directors are Indra Utoyo, Abdus Somad Arif, Heri Sunaryadi, Herdy Rosadi Harman, Dian Rachmawan, Honesti Basyir and Muhammad Awaluddin.

The shareholders also appointed Dolfie Othniel Fredric Palit, a politician and former legislator from the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), as an independent commissioner.

Doflie is the first active politician to be appointed an executive in a state company in the past decade, igniting concerns that Telkom may be turned into a cash cow for his party. (ren/nvn)
