Mayor wants better air with Thursday car ban

P

ekanbaru Mayor H. Firdaus launched the '€œKamis Bersih Tanpa Asap'€ (Clean, Smog-Free Thursdays) movement on Thursday, abbreviated as Kasih Papa (Papa'€™s Love), banning all civil servants in Pekanbaru municipality from using private vehicles to go to their offices every Thursday.

Firdaus said the policy was aimed at maintaining air quality by reducing air pollution from gas emissions. '€œThe movement partly supports the Clean Indonesia Movement,'€ he added.

According to him, despite being only a day, the ban would create a chain reaction. '€œThe reduction in using private vehicles nationally will minimize the state'€™s burden of providing fuel subsidies,'€ he said.

The ban is also expected to increase interest in public transportation, such as the Pekanbaru Transmetro busway and public minivans. (***)
