commissioner of the National Police Commission (Kompolnas), Adrianus Meliala, has said there is little chance of the National Police issuing a warrant to terminate the investigation (SP3) surrounding Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputy chairman Bambang Widjojanto.
'On whether Bambang's case will be terminated [with an SP3], I think it is unlikely,' he said as quoted by Antara news agency in Jakarta on Sunday.
The National Police's detective division named Bambang a suspect on Friday, accusing him of ordering a witness to commit perjury at the Constitutional Court in 2010 in a regional election dispute case in Waringin Barat, Central Kalimantan.
Adrianus said it seemed likely that President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo would give a chance to both the National Police and the KPK to prove the correctness of their claims over Bambang's case as well as on corruption cases allegedly involving Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan, the National Police chief candidate.
'It is likely that Jokowi will take such a way in handling the problem,' he said.
Adrianus went on to say that there had been a clear difference between the methods of former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and President Jokowi in handling rivalry between the KPK and the National Police.
Yudhoyono had tended to take sides with the KPK by directly breaking up the conflict, while President Jokowi had chosen to take himself away from the confrontation and let the two institutions solve the problem by themselves.
'President Yudhoyono seemed to be pro-KPK while Jokowi has decided to not intervene in the conflict,' said Adrianus.
Bambang's lawyer, Usman Hamid, said in Jakarta on Saturday that the KPK deputy chairman's legal team would file an SP3 request over the case.
He said terminating Bambang's case needed to occur so that he could still carry out his duties, as one of the KPK's leaders, of investigating corruption cases in the country. (ebf)(+++)
