hree high school students in Bogor, West Java, have created a water purification device to solve the area's potable water supply problem, which especially affects people residing in flood-prone areas.
"We hope this simple device can help people affected by flooding to meet their need for clean water," one of the students, Fuad, said in Bandung on Monday as quoted by Antara news agency.
The device, created by three students at senior high school SMAN Bogor - Fuad, Robbi and Indah -- comprises a tank, two filtration pipes and a mixing container.
According to Indah, the device works in four phases to clean the water. The first phase is coagulation, followed by flocculation -- a chemical process to remove the contaminants and pollutants.
The third phase is sedimentation to precipitate the solid materials present in the water, and finally, filtration to separate the water from the pollutants via the two pipes.
"The installation can accommodate 50 liters of water and is able to produce 40 liters of clean water within 15 to 20 minutes," Indah explained.
The device was awarded third place during the recent National Technology Competition for high school students for sanitation and sustainable clean-water supply held by the Environmental Engineering Student Association of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). (hhr)(+++)
