he trial of former Indramayu regent Irianto Mahfud Sidik and current chairman of West Java chapter of Golkar Party began on Monday at the Bandung Corruption Court.
Irianto stands accused of involvement in a graft case surrounding the development of a power plant in Sumuradem village, Sukra district, in the regency.
Prosecutor Juli Isnur said Irianto, commonly referred to as Yance, was charged for allegedly violating articles 2 and 3 of Law 20/2001 on corruption, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment.
Isnur said Yance, who is also the West Java Council deputy speaker, along with businessman Agung Riyoto of PT Wiharta Karya Agung, allegedly caused state losses of Rp 5.3 billion (US$424,000) while acquiring land for the power plant.
He alleged the defendant sold land to the company even though Yance knew the land was a state asset. (***)
