Komnas HAM to investigate alleged abuse of power at National Police

T

he National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has said it will investigate alleged abuse of power at the National Police following the naming of Corruption Eradication Commission deputy chairman Bambang Widjojanto as a suspect in a case related to a regional election dispute trial.

'€œWe want to see whether, in the implementation of the National Police'€™s duties, particularly the case [involving Bambang], there has been any abuse of power,'€ Komnas HAM commissioner Nur Kholis said as quoted by Antara news agency in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He said Komnas HAM would use Law No.39/1999 on human rights as the legal basis of the investigation that would be conducted by the commission'€™s investigation team of alleged criminalization against KPK leaders.

Nur Kholis said the team established would carry out its duties based on the abuse of power allegations.

'€œIf there has been abuse of power, this is what will become the target or the basis for an investigation by Komnas HAM,'€ he said.

On Jan.23, the National Police'€™s detective division named Bambang a suspect, accusing him of ordering a witness to commit perjury at the Constitutional Court in 2010 in a case related to a regional election dispute in Waringin Barat, Central Kalimantan.

Bambang praised the commission's decision to focus its investigation on the police'€™s alleged abuse of power. '€œIt is suspected that there has been an abuse of power. This is also a human rights violation,'€ said the KPK deputy chairman after submitting reports about his case to Komnas HAM commissioners.

Komnas HAM established the team to investigate the alleged criminalization against the KPK leaders on Monday. The team is comprised of 22 experts, eight of whom are Komnas HAM commissioners.

The commission has said it will immediately summon related parties, such as KPK leaders, the National Police deputy chief, the police'€™s crime investigation division (Bareskrim) chief and the Waringin Barat regent, to give information related to the case. (ebf)(+++)
