he West Jakarta municipality authorities have raided a number of places known to be illegal dumping spots, targeting litterbugs in the process.
West Jakarta Mayor Anas Effendi said he deployed 200 personnel from the Public Order Agency, the Sanitation Agency, and subdistrict and district offices in the municipality to arrest residents caught littering.
Grogol Petamburan deputy district head Agus Ramdhani said residents usually littered on pedestrian bridges, riverbanks, roadsides and traditional markets. He said his team had watched people littering on a pedestrian bridge in Tanjung Duren district.
'People usually throw garbage while walking on the bridge, thinking that nobody is watching them,' Agus said.
The officials arrested 26 litterbugs who were charged with violating Bylaw No. 3/2013 on waste management that carries a fine of up to Rp 500,000. 'I admitted that it was my fault. I won't litter anymore,' said Retno Floritawati, a resident who was fined Rp 100,000 for littering in the Taman Anggrek Mall area. (***)
