round 150 hotel and restaurant employees, tour guides and those working in the hospitality sector in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), took to the streets on Tuesday in protest against a ministerial circular banning administrations from holding activities outside their office compounds.
The protesters, affiliated with the NTB Tourism Workers Union, consisted of employees from dozens of hotels in the Senggigi resort area of West Lombok, Kuta in Central Lombok and Gili Trawangan in North Lombok.
They conveyed their protest against the Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Ministry's ministerial circular No. 11/2014 on budget efficiency at the NTB provincial council, Mataram city hall and the NTB gubernatorial office.
They deemed that the ministerial circular had caused a significant drop in the number of tourist arrivals to Lombok and NTB in general since October 2014 until the end of January this year.
The circular, which emphasized cost efficiency for meetings at government institutions, had caused many planned meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) and agency meetings to be canceled in Lombok, said rally coordinator Mardi Sumardi. (***)
