he National Police says it will respect the National Commission on Human Rights' (Komnas HAM) investigation into alleged criminalization of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputy chairman Bambang Widjojanto.
'We honor very much this mediation,' National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Ronny F. Sompie said as quoted by Antara news agency in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Komnas HAM commissioners visited the National Police headquarters on Wednesday to meet with the police's deputy chief, Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti, who was recently named acting police chief.
Ronny said the commission conducted the visit to learn about the police's arrest-protocol.
During the mediation, we gave the commission comprehensive explanations about the matter,' he said.
The National Police's crime investigation division chief, Insp. Gen. Budi Waseso, is scheduled to visit Komnas HAM to provide additional information about Bambang's arrest on Friday.
Earlier, Komnas HAM said it had received information from Bambang about his case.
On Jan. 23, the National Police named Bambang a suspect in a case related to a 2010 regional election dispute in Kotawaringin Barat regency, Central Kalimantan. An Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician, Sugianto Sabran, reported the KPK deputy chairman to the police for allegedly ordering a witness to commit perjury during proceedings in the case, which took place at the Constitutional Court.
On Tuesday, Komnas HAM established a team tasked with investigating alleged criminalization of the KPK as a response to Bambang's arrest and his subsequent naming as a suspect. The team has 22 members, eight of which are Komnas HAM commissioners.
Komnas HAM commissioner Nur Kholis, who is also head of the investigation team, said the team would make recommendations regarding the conflict between the KPK and the National Police to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo. (ebf)(+++)
