One of the suspected perpetrators of the shooting of a Lampung newspaper's editor-in-chief was shot dead by Bandarlampung Police and the Lampung Police officers in a raid on Friday.
Nineteen-year-old Rafli Irawan, aka Joki, was thought to have been involved in the murder of Fokus Lampung weekly's chief editor, Beni Faisal, on Jan. 25.
Rafli was shot twice in the back during a raid conducted by the police in Melinting village, Jabung, East Lampung, on Friday. The police also confiscated one firearm and one T-shaped key from the premises.
'[Rafli] was a perpetrator in Beni's murder. He was not the shooter but drove the motorcycle carrying the shooter,' Bandarlampung Police chief Sr. Comr. Dwi Irianto told The Jakarta Post on Friday.
Two suspects of the murder were also arrested in the raid, as well as three suspected motorcycle thieves wanted by the police.
The motive of the shooting remains unclear, but the police have surmised from eyewitnesses' accounts that Beni may have been shot by a gang of three robbers who had intended to steal his motorbike, which was parked in front of his house. (dyl/nfo)
