est Kalimantan has invited ambassadors to the celebrations of the Imlek and Cap Go Meh Chinese holidays in Singkawang in an effort to boost the city as a tourist destination.
This year, ten ambassadors, among others those of China, Malaysia and of the United States, had been invited to Imlek Chinese New Year, which falls on Thursday, and Cap Go Meh (the 15th day of the first month of the Lunar Calendar) celebrations, West Kalimantan deputy governor Christiandy Sanjaya said.
He added that the Tourism Ministry had identified Singkawang as a tourist destination thanks to the holidays. 'The celebrations have attracted not only local but also foreign tourists to Singkawang,' Christiandy said in Pontianak as quoted by Antara news agency.
Cultural attractions and festivals, including dragon and lion shows and parades of holy effigies, would be held along the main thoroughfares of Singkawang, dubbed the 'Hong Kong of Indonesia' because of its predominantly ethnic Chinese population, Christiandy said. (++++)
