ealth Minister Nila Moeloek inaugurated an integrated service on Wednesday, with an emergency room, wards, an operating theater and an intensive care unit (ICU) at Sitanala Leprosy Hospital in Tangerang, Banten.
Nila said the new three-story building was funded by the state budget. 'We hope the hospital can significantly decrease the number of lepers,' she said.
According to Nila, as a class A hospital, Sitanala had the highest number of leprosy referrals.
'It should also become a center of education, research and development for medical officers, especially those focusing on leprosy rehabilitation,' she said.
Sitanala director Liliana Lazuardy said the hospital was founded in 1956 as a leprosarium.
'It now has 18 polyclinics including for leprosy, dentistry and 15 other specialists,' she said.
With a capacity of 200 beds, the number of general patients in Sitanala is much bigger than the number of lepers, who account for 16 percent of total patients.
