.S. stocks ended mostly lower on Thursday, tipping the Dow Jones Industrial average and Standard & Poor's 500 index slightly below their recent all-time highs.
Energy stocks fell more than the rest of the market as the price of oil plunged again. Chevron and Exxon Mobil were among the biggest decliners in the Dow. The Nasdaq edged higher.
On Thursday:
The Dow fell 10.15 points, or 0.1 percent, to 18,214.42.
The S&P 500 index slipped 3.12 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,110.74.
The Nasdaq composite rose 20.75 points, or 0.4 percent, to 4,987.89.
For the week:
The Dow is up 73.98 points, or 0.4 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 0.44 points, or 0.02 percent.
The Nasdaq has gained 31.93 points, or 0.6 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 391.35 points, or 2.2 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 51.84 points, or 2.5 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 251.83 points, or 5.3 percent. (***)
