An electrical short circuit in an elevator in Pondok Indah Mall 2 (PIM2) shopping mall, Pondok Indah, South Jakarta, created thick smoke and caused panic among mall visitors on Friday.
Bian, a janitor at the mall, said the smoke spread threw a part of the mall at about 2:30 p.m. when spewed from an elevator that was under renovation. He said there was no fire as many people had suspected.
'The mall management handled the short circuit five minutes later,' Bian said as quoted by tempo.co.
Some stores closed their doors and a number of visitors hurriedly left the mall.
A South Jakarta Fire Department officer, Surahman, said the smoke came from a welding tool in an elevator on the third floor of the mall.
