Your letters: Uniting against violent criminals

M

otorcycle theft has become a violent criminal trend in Greater Jakarta and Cilegon, Banten, over the past month. Most of the victims were driving alone at night.

Such crimes could have been prevented if the police, government and the wider community cooperated in anticipation of similar actions.

Public awareness should begin to be built in a spirit of harmonious cooperation on security in public spaces. People should have the right to obtain safety and security in public areas, such as terminals, roads, as well as stations.

The state is obliged to fulfill these rights. Security is a fundamental right that has been inherent since humans were born. In peacetime, the police serve as a spearhead to protect the public from a variety of security threats.

For that reason, collateral security is essentially a form of public service. Every citizen has the right to obtain good public service from the government. But in reality, it must be admitted, a sense of security on the matter is very rare and hard to come by.

Whereas in accordance with Law No. 2/2002 on the National Police, the police have functions and main tasks to maintain public order and safety, law enforcement, protection and service to the community. Only a police presence will restore a sense of security (The Jakarta Post, Feb. 26).

The police should immediately see how subsequent governments acted and also should enhance the security management in public spaces so that people do not become anxious and worried.

What must be avoided is violence met with brutal actions as recently happened. In addition to the police, the public should also begin to increase its participation to maintain security in their respective environments, such as Siskamling (neighborhood watch), which was never done in times past, a local wisdom that should be maintained.

In addition, the public should be warned not to provide the opportunity for crime to occur.

Do not use excessive jewelry or an expensive variety of gadgets that will invite crime. Local governments are also required to install CCTV cameras in areas that are prone to crime.

Therefore, if we see there is a security threat in the environment, we are also entitled to ask the police to take action, in order to provide protection and security. Do not be afraid and do not hesitate to ask about the matter with the police, wherever and whenever.

If people see there are people who intend to harm others in public areas or anywhere else, and if there happens to be a passing policeman, the public has the right to stop and ask him to take legal action, or the public can also call the police.

A sense of security is our right as citizens, and at the same time is the responsibility of the police as part of the fulfillment of good public services.
