PAN to speed up chairmanship election

T

he steering committee of the National Mandate Party (PAN) congress has announced it intends to expedite the chairmanship election to be held on Sunday, in the wake of escalating tensions between the two chairman candidates'€™ supporting camps.

"We will hasten the chairmanship election. Hopefully, we will have a new chairman today," committee deputy chairman Farhan Hamid told a press briefing on Sunday.

The congress finally decided to hold the chairmanship election through voting, instead of seeking acclamation.

The steering committee had scheduled the chairmanship election as the main agenda for Monday, the third and final day of the congress.

Farhan explained that the congress committee had summoned both candidates, incumbent chairman Hatta Rajasa and Zulkifli Hasan, over the flaring tempers among their supporters, which led to a brawl on Sunday.

"We might skip several sessions today in order to speed up the chairmanship election," Farhan explained.

As many as 592 delegates of the party'€™s provincial chapters and regency and municipal branches have been registered as eligible voters to elect a new chairman.
