City Council urged to stop inquiry into Ahok

eputy Governor Djarot Syaiful Hidayat has called on the City Council to stop its political investigation into governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama in connection with the alleged submission of an unofficial draft budget to the Home Ministry.

'€œSpeaking frankly, we should not be caught in such a useless political row. It is better to provide a service to residents and have the draft budget approved. So that we can achieve progress,'€ he said at City Hall on Monday

Djarot also expressed his thanks to the NasDem Party'€™s executive board, which has instructed its councilors on the City Council to retract its support for the inquiry.

'€œThere is no problem; it'€™s the party'€™s authority to do so. We have been prepared to face the political inquiry and we thank them for it. It means the party takes our side,'€ he said.

When asked whether the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) would follow suit, he said it had not happened yet.

Last week, all factions on the City Council agreed to set up a special committee to carry out an inquiry into the alleged violation by the governor of the 2014 Legislative Institutions Law and the 2004 Regional Administration Law on the grounds that the governor had delivered an undeliberated version of the draft budget to the Home Ministry for approval.

Ahok admitted that he had delivered the draft budget prepared through an e-budgeting system since he had found an allocation of funds amounting to Rp 12.1 trillion (US$98 million) for unimportant programs in the draft budget endorsed by the City Council. (rms)
