n alleged thief died after an angry mob took the law into its own hands at a railway track on Jl. Purbaya in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, on Sunday morning.
South Jakarta Police spokesman Comr. Aswin said that the alleged thief was identified as Cecep Saidin, a Batu Ampar resident in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta.
'Cecep and three other perpetrators allegedly robbed a woman, threatening her with a machete,' he said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Sunday. He said the police were still trying to identify the woman, who was believed to have fled the scene after the incident.
Aswin alleged that the four suspects, who were riding on motorcycles, tried to snatch the handbag of a woman who was sitting on the back of a motorcycle. Upon hearing the woman yell for help, locals chased down the alleged perpetrators.
'Three of them got away while Cecep was lynched,' he said.
The alleged perpetrator died on the way to the Kramat Jati Hospital in East Jakarta.
