Lasro regrets markup in education agency

L

asro Marbun, who was chief of the Jakarta Education Agency in 2014, has expressed shock at the alleged markup in the procurement of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) devices for a number of schools in the city that caused Rp 330 billion (US$26.4 million) in losses to the state.

He acknowledged that the procurement of the devices occurred on his watch between February and December, 2014, but he denied knowing anything about it although he did succeed in preventing Rp 3.4 trillion in potential losses from corruption during the period.

'€œI have personally reflected on this. I feel as if I have been slapped and am ashamed because behind the success in saving the state Rp 3.4 trillion, I was caught out by the markup case,'€ he said as quoted by kompas.com.

Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama once expressed his pride in Lasro, who he said had succeeded in not only to preventing corruption in the Education Agency but had also coped with human-resource problems in the sector.

In disclosing the allocation by the City Council of Rp 139 billion for the planned procurement of UPS devices for 55 schools in the city, Ahok said similar purchases also occurred in 2014.

He said he suspected a huge markup in the procurement project because the UPS devices were budgeted at Rp 5.8 billion per unit while according to the market price they cost only Rp 163 million per unit. (rms)
