he Surakarta municipality expected its off-street parking system to be implemented this year, or at the latest by 2016, Mayor FX Hadi 'Rudy' Rudyatmo, said Monday.
Rudy said the policy implementation had been delayed because of the lack of parking lots to accommodate the vehicles that were currently parking on sidewalks.
Rudy deemed the off-street parking policy urgent given traffic density in the city, which was exacerbated by on-street parking, including along major thoroughfares in the city.
The municipality has studied a number of locations that could be used as parking lots, such as the southern section of R. Maladi Stadium in the Sriwedari area, the empty lot at Vastenburg Fort, Jenderal Soedirman corridor and West City Square in Manahan area.
For West City Square, Rudy said the municipality could close the square and build a seven-floor parking lot there. However, there was also a plan to build a parking lot below the square, so it would not be closed, he said.
Each of the parking lots is expected to accommodate at least 600 cars.
