cting chairman of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Taufiequrahman Ruki said his commission has been overwhelmed by graft cases that have to be handled in the next ten months before the KPK leaders end their term of office in December.
'Imagine, in the next ten months, I have to finish 36 graft cases. It isn't a light load. The 36 graft cases are quite a heavy burden,' he said at the KPK building on Monday night.
Ruki -- who has been slammed for refusing to request that the Supreme Court reopen the Budi Gunawan case and instead handed it over to the Attorney General's Office on Monday after the South Jakarta District Court invalidated Budi's suspect status -- said that he would not leave the cases to the next KPK leaders and was determined to finish them by the end of this year. He, however, doubted KPK investigators' capacity to complete their investigations into the cases during the short period of time.
'The police's Detective Corps once said: 'They [the police investigators] will not be able to finish the 36 graft cases.' Will KPK investigators be able to?,' he said.
Ruki said the situation was more crucial since former minister of religious affairs Suryadharma Ali and former chairman of the House's Commission VII on energy and environment Sutan Bhatoegana, who have been named graft suspects, have filed a pretrial petition to the district court over their statuses as suspects. This will give additional work to the commission besides its daily investigation activities because it will have to face pretrial hearings.
'So, this work is a great burden for us. If we cannot finish it, we will pass down a debt of legal cases to the next KPK leaders. If we are able to, then thanks be to God. If we are not able to, I don't know what to do,' he said. (rms)
