Advertorial: BCA donates glasses for poor students

em>Something special took place at Karangmojo State High School (SMAN) 1 in the Gunungkidul regency of Yogyakarta about two weeks ago on Feb. 16.

On that day, the school offered free eye examinations for students. Those diagnosed with poor eyesight were giving reading glasses. This was done as part of the school'€™s desire to allow students to continue with their studies without any handicapping hurdles.

The students, not surprisingly, welcomed the assistance with open arms. '€œI was really happy to get a free eye examination,'€ said a tenth grade student. '€œI have a number of friends who needed eye glasses.'€

One of the students in need was 11th grade student Bagas Saputra, from the math and science class, and Rangga, another 11th grade student taking the same courses.

'€œAccording to the results of my eye exam, I needed reading glasses. It'€™s true that I'€™ve often had difficulty reading smaller font sizes,'€ Bagas said. '€œFortunately, we have a lot of good friends eager to help.'€

For a long time, these students have wanted reading glasses. However, their financial situation meant that they couldn'€™t afford to fulfill such basic needs. Despite these road blocks, they continued with their studies to the best of their abilities.

These students were finally able to be relieved of this burden when PT Bank Central Asia (BCA) decided to work with their school, Yayasan Berani and PT Berkat AIIA to provide the youngsters with free glasses.

'€œObviously I am really happy to get these reading glasses. I'€™ll receive them next month,'€ Bagas said, with a big smile on his face.

Rangga expressed similarly positive sentiments. '€œThe glasses will be really helpful. Especially since I'€™m about to face my midterms and finals. Reading will be so much easier,'€ Rangga said.

Aside from the students in Karangmojo, a number of other students going to schools in the Gunugkidul regency were given free eye examinations. Three schools in Ponjong, three in Semanu and another four in Karangmojo all received aid from BCA. The eye exams were conducted by two eye examiners and one coordinator.

Throughout the month of February, a total of 17 schools in Gunungkidul (Yogyakarta), Tatakan (Serang) and Gadingrejo (Lampung) were the beneficiaries of BCA'€™s aid. In all, the bank donated some 1,000 reading glasses to needy students.

All of these eye examinations, which took place between Feb. 16-18, and free reading glasses were part of BCA'€™s corporate social responsibility program for improving the quality of education throughout the archipelago. These activities coincided with the bank'€™s 58th anniversary.

'€œWe want to commemorate our 58thyear by sharing. We realize that BCA'€™s development must coincide with the development of the people around us. That is why we are doing all of these social care activities for our anniversary,'€ BCA president director Jahja Setiaatmadja said.

In addition to donating glasses for those in need, the bank has also provided books for school libraries and computers for the computer labs along with other important facilities to help student learn.

'€œWe hope that these books can add to the collection of these schools'€™ libraries and motivate students to learn even more,'€ BCA corporate secretary Inge Setiawati said.
