Conrad Bali to hold batik-making workshop on Nyepi Day

In collaboration with the Iwan Tirta Private Collection, Conrad Bali will conduct a two-day batik-making workshop, on March 20 and 21.

Era Soekamto, creative director of the Iwan Tirta Private Collection, will conduct the workshop, whose dates coincide with the Balinese Hindu holiday of Nyepi '€“ the Day of Silence that will fall on March 21.

The workshop is part of the hotel'€™s Living Lobby Art Exhibition series, currently being held in partnership with the leading Indonesian batik designer and producer. The event marks the first of four quarterly exhibitions and workshops this year highlighting masterful works that represent the cornerstones of Indonesia art and culture.

Conrad Bali offers the two-day workshop in its package for a minimum three-night stay, from March 19 to 22.

Commenting about the event, Conrad Bali general manager Jean-Sébastien Kling said, '€œWe feel deeply honored to partner with the Iwan Tirta Private Collection. This event presents an opportunity for guests and local residents to experience the extraordinary indigenous art of Indonesia and discover the heritage and philosophies that underpin the country'€™s culture, customs and beliefs.'€

The late Nursjirwan Tirtaamidjaja, popularly known as Iwan Tirta, was the batik maestro who created more than 10,000 original hand-drawn pieces of batik art before his passing in July 2010. Born in Blora, Central Java, Iwan discovered motifs dated back from between the 6th and 18th centuries and brought new life to a batik originally worn and collected only by the elite members of the Indonesian royal court.(JP)
