Greater Jakarta: Official admits proposing UPS procurement

F

ormer Central Jakarta Education Agency head Zainal Soleman said on Wednesday he had coordinated with former Jakarta Education Agency head Lasro Marbun to procure controversial uninterrupted power systems (UPS), at a cost of Rp 5.8 billion (US$446,600) per unit.

Zainal, who was responsible for procuring the UPS for 24 schools in Central Jakarta, believed the price for the procurement was reasonable.

'€œIt was the genuine price. The schools needed them,'€ he said, as quoted by kompas.com.

Lasro swiftly denied Zainal'€™s statement, saying he received no reports about the procurement.

Zainal, who currently serves as the head of the Youth and Sports Agency, said the funds were not only to buy the UPS but also other supporting devices, including 384 batteries priced at Rp 8.1 million each and eight shelves that cost Rp 110 million each.

He said he had proposed the UPS procurement because he received complaints from school principals about power instability that might affect their electric facilities.

'€œIf the power is often down, it can damage the electronic devices,'€ he said.

Zainal said he then gathered school principals from Central Jakarta at his office on Sept 9. '€œWe held a meeting to discuss many issues, including the procurement of the UPS,'€ he said.

He said the meeting also involved UPS distributor companies '€” PT Duta Cipta Artha, PT Istana Multimedia Center and PT Offisaindo Adhi Pura.

'€œThe principals were also interested and then sent us the proposal letters to procure the UPS,'€ he said.
