he patrol ship of the Sea Transportation Directorate General's beach and sea guard division has arrested two Singaporean tug boats for illegally operating to direct ships passing through the Malacca Strait and Batam waters.
Batam Harbor head Heri Setyobudi said the tug boats belonging to DM Logistic, a Singaporean company, were nabbed while they were directing a tanker ship passing through the strait on Tuesday.
'The boats have operated illegally. The tanker should be directed by Indonesian tug boats. If the Singaporean boats want to operate, they should first get a permit from Indonesian authorities,' Heri told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
He said that the operation of the Singaporean boats, which have a total of seven crew members consisting of three Singaporeans and four Indonesians, had caused losses to Indonesian incomes.
He said ships that moored in Indonesian waters or enter Singapore's port would need the services of tug boats that cost between US$5,000 and $10,000 per trip.
