hat Tangerang administration has banned mussel farming in its administrative area because of polluted waters, but fishermen keep on farming the shellfish despite the risk of dangerous chemical contamination.
Research has long found mussels from the Tangerang coastal area in Banten province to be unsafe for human consumption due to contamination by mercury and lead pollution from industrial waste. 'We have relayed the findings to the fishermen, but they on keep farming the shellfish and disregard the risks for human health,' Tangerang Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office's fish farming sub-division head Dwi Retno Susilaningsing said on Thursday as quoted by Antara news agency.
Dwi said the farming was still taking place in Kosambi, Teluknaga, Mauk, Sukadiri, Kronjo, Kresek and Pakuhaji waters.
She said the Tangerang authority had been aware of the problem and would seriously address it, adding that the fishermen would instead be introduced to the more lucrative farming of vannamei shrimp.(+++)
