he government is to build 10 maritime polytechnics in the next five years to support President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo's vision of making Indonesia a world maritime axis, according to Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Indroyono Soesilo.
Speaking in Banyuwangi, East Java, on Friday, Indroyono said that the 10 maritime polytechnics would adopt international standards so that graduates could compete globally.
Regional administrations could also propose establishing maritime polytechnics, as long as they were able to provide a 10-hectare plot of land, he added.
Meanwhile, the head of the human-resource development agency at the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry, Suseno Sukoyono, said the government was ready to disburse Rp 1.5 trillion for the 10 maritime polytechnics.
This year three polytechnics will be established in Bone, South Sulawesi; Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara; and Karawang, West Java. Banyuwangi will see a polytechnic built in 2016.
Indriyono said that the government would also prepare 20 out of 150 maritime vocational high schools (SMKs) to meet international standards.
"We will pick the SMKs from Sabang to Merauke," he said as quoted by tempo.co.
"Human resources are the most important component."
Indroyono added that the government would cooperate with the Financial Services Authority (OJK) so that diplomas from maritime SMKs could be used as collateral for bank loans. That way, he said, maritime-SMK graduates could get capital to start businesses. (nvn)(++++)
