The legal team of French death-row inmate, Serge Atlaoui, has said it will continue to try to prevent his upcoming execution.
Lawyer Nancy Yuliana, said the team would file a protest to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM). Nancy said the legal team would strive to prevent their client being executed as he was not guilty of involvement in illicit drug manufacturing activity.
"We will convey our protest because Serge was not involved in the illicit drug case. He worked only as a welder and was not involved in the manufacturing of drugs and narcotics as was charged," she said as quoted by Antara at the Tangerang District Court on Wednesday.
Commenting on the results of the second case review hearing at the court, Nancy admitted that she was not optimistic Atlaoui would escape the death sentence as her request to call witnesses was rejected by the judges.
In other similar cases a convict requesting a second case review could call witnesses; but in Atlaoui's case, the panel of judges rejected the call.
From her previous experience, a second case review usually takes time; moreover, other death-row convicts are filing second case reviews. "This is what has made us very disappointed," said Nancy.
Atlaoui was arrested together with dozens of others in 2005 for allegedly operating an ecstasy factory located in Cikande, Tangerang, Banten.
In 2007, the Supreme Court sentenced him to death. Atlaoui filed a clemency request to President Jokowi but it was rejected.
He filed a second case review on Feb.10 and attended his first session on Wednesday. (ebf)(++++)
