engue fever in Jakarta had claimed five lives, with 1,042 cases recorded as of March, a decline compared to the same period last year, an official said on Tuesday.
Jakarta Health Agency head Kusmedi urged Jakartans to be on alert during the weather transition period, when the number of dengue fever cases usually increased, and to get involved in the eradication of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, the dengue fever transmitter.
'Victims of the dengue fever are mostly children aged between five and 12. Citizens should also remind school teachers to keep their school environment clean, because the mosquitoes usually surface during school hours, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.,' Kusmedi said.
He also reminded parents to tell their children to avoid the mosquitoes' breeding nests.
He further said that this year, dengue fever cases occurred mostly in the South Jakarta areas of Pancoran, Kebayoran Baru, Cilandak and Pesanggrahan.
Last year, a total of 3,408 cases were recorded until March with the most cases in East Jakarta, Kusmedi said as quoted by Antara news agency. (+++++)(++++)
