Issues of the day: Lee Kuan Yew, founder of Singapore, dies

Lee Kuan Yew - AP

March 23, Online/AP

Lee Kuan Yew, who founded modern Singapore and was both feared for his authoritarian tactics and admired for turning the city-state into one of the world'€™s richest nations, died Monday, the government said. He was 91. Lee was admitted to Singapore General Hospital on Feb. 5 for severe pneumonia and was later put on life support.

The Prime Minister'€™s Office said in a statement posted on its website that Lee '€œpassed away peacefully'€ at the hospital at 3:18 a.m. Monday.

Your comments:

You have done well, Mr. Lee. Have a good rest and may God forever bless you!

Lee Kuan Yew succeeded in creating the successful '€œguided democracy'€ that Sukarno was seeking.

Considering the responsibilities he has shouldered all these years, it is amazing that he made it to the ripe old age of 91. Definitely a tough one to follow!

If the measure of success is wealth, yes, Singapore made it. They have the richest and the highest paid government in the world! Ask any Singaporean and they say they'€™re a very '€œgracious'€ people.

Try crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing when the light is against you and see how '€œgracious'€ they are!

In his '€œmemoirs'€ Lee Kuan Yew confirmed that he'€™s not interested in pride, respect or admiration. He wanted Singaporeans to fear him and they did!

What we need to see and watch out for is what'€™s going to happen now that the fear is gone!

If only UMNO leadership was not afraid and let Lee grow to be a Malaysian statesman, the Malaysian currency will still be on par with the Singapore dollar.

If Malaysia'€™s concept were allowed to grow, Malaysia would prosper and Lee Kuan Yew could be likened to a big frog in a very big well.

He is one of the biggest leaders of the world who came from one of the tiniest countries.

His strong determination in building his nation will be remembered and will be a part of history.

He is one of those legends who left bold footprints of success in the history of Asia'€™s and the world'€™s developments.

Fond farewell Mr. Lee, and rest in peace now. Your legacies will surely be remembered.

Creating a society where everyone follows the law, is gracious to each other, respectful of one another'€™s religion and has a strong economy is every world leader dreams of '€” especially when Singapore does not boast any natural resources, unless you consider their geographical location as a natural resource.

Yes they have problems, but look at Malaysia or even Indonesia and their problems are miniscule in comparison.

He is a remarkable man who achieved so much for his nation and his people.

He is an example to any head of state.
